Georgia Marble has supplied cut and fabricated marble dimension stone since the company was organized in 1884 on Samuel Tate's north Georgia property, in the north Georgia marble belt. The business was historically organized into three product groups — Dimension Stone, Industrial, and Consumer — with dimension stone work carried out at two plants: the Memorial Products Plant at Tate, GA, and the Structural Products Plant at Nelson, GA. The Structural Products Plant fabricated panels, columns, floor tile, thresholds, sills, benches, signage, and custom architectural work, and also imported marble and granite from international sources to complement the company's own stone. Quarrying continues today under Polycor Inc. at the Georgia Marble Quarry and the Marble Hill Quarry in Tate, GA.

Discuss a project

Marblstal

Marblstal was Georgia Marble's permanent marble partition system for restrooms, washrooms, shower rooms and dressing rooms. It was offered prefabricated in standard packages for faster installation, or custom fabricated to a project's own dimensions and stone selection. As a dimension-stone product line it drew on the same named marble varieties — White Cherokee, Solar Gray, Pearl Grey, Etowah Fleuri and Commercial White — quarried at Tate.

American Classics Marble Tile

American Classics Marble Tile was cut in nine marble varieties, each finished to 12 in. x 12 in. x 3/8 in., polished on one face with beveled top edges — a standard modular format for floor and wall installation. Because it was cut from the same quarry-run stone as Georgia Marble's panels and columns, tile ordered for a project could be matched to cladding and trim cut from the same varieties.

Pathways

Pathways was a fundraising programme built around sandblasted personalization of marble and clay pavers, benches and signage — a way for institutions to sell inscribed stone units to donors as part of a capital campaign. The programme's pavers and benches were produced using the same sandblasting and fabrication methods applied to the company's architectural and memorial work.

Three generations at the same quarry

Much of the fabrication work described here was done by cutters and finishers whose fathers and grandfathers had quarried and cut the same stone before them — a continuity of hands-on craft running alongside the company's own long history, from its 1884 founding through to the quarry's operation today.
