HISTORICAL RECORD — INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS
Georgia Marble Calcium Carbonate in Industry
The Tate quarry's stone is close to pure white crystalline calcium carbonate. That purity is what made an industrial minerals business possible alongside the dimension-stone business: quarried marble was ground to a range of grades, from coarse to ultra-fine and screened, and sold as an inert filler and extender across a wide range of manufactured products.
The historical Industrial product group supplied this ground calcium carbonate filler into dozens of individual end uses. Rather than list each one separately, this page consolidates them into four categories: construction and building materials, coatings and sealants and plastics, consumer and food-grade products, and environmental and water treatment uses. Each is described here as a category and a use, not as a specification — grades, mesh sizes, and blend ratios are not part of this record.
Construction and Building Materials
Ground Georgia marble was supplied as a filler and aggregate across a range of construction materials. It went into adhesives and putties and into joint compounds as an extender, and into asphalt compounds used in paving and roofing formulations. Coarser screened grades were sold as stucco and cement aggregate, and ground marble was also a component of roofing tile and of textured coatings and EIFS (exterior insulation and finish systems) applied to building exteriors.
Across these uses, the stone functioned as inert bulk and body rather than as a decorative or structural element — the same purity that suited it to dimension stone made it a stable, consistent filler for manufactured building products.
Coatings, Sealants and Plastics
Ground marble was formulated into caulks and sealants and into paint and coatings as a filler, and supplied to manufacturers of plastics and plastic colorants, where it served as an extender and a carrier for pigment. It was also used in rubber compounding.
The company described itself, in that period, as an early mover in fine-ground dry-process powders for the cultured marble market — a claim particular to that era of the business, not a current one.
Consumer and Food-Grade Products
Ground marble filler also reached consumer-facing manufactured goods. It was used as a filler in carpet backing and in cleaning compounds, and it was the base filler for cultured marble, the manufactured material used in countertops, sinks, and shower surrounds. Ground marble also went into floor, ceiling, and wall tile manufacturing. Mar-blend was the company's own blended filler product supplied specifically to cultured marble manufacturers.
A separate, food-grade line of ground calcium carbonate was produced to meet food chemical codex requirements and Kosher certification, and was used for flour enrichment and in cake mixes, corn meal, and animal feed.
Environmental and Water Treatment
Coarse screened grades of ground marble were also sold for environmental and water applications: water treatment, water filtration, and acid neutralisation. In these uses the calcium carbonate's purity and its natural buffering action were the properties of value, the same underlying chemistry that also carried into Deco Lawnlime and Lime-Rite, the company's pelletized lime products for soil treatment described on the consumer and landscape products page.
